Posted by Mid Lake Campground | Toledo Bend Lake, Texas
Toledo Bend draws tournament anglers from across the South — and for good reason. The lake’s size, structure, and year-round bass population make it one of the premier competitive fishing venues in Texas and Louisiana.
Whether you’re competing in a sanctioned trail event, a regional club tournament, or a local open, this guide covers what you need to know about fishing tournaments on Toledo Bend and why Mid Lake Campground is tournament headquarters for teams fishing the Texas side.
Why Tournament Anglers Choose Toledo Bend
Toledo Bend’s characteristics are almost purpose-built for competitive bass fishing.
- Size and variety: At 185,000 acres, the lake has enough structure, depth variation, and habitat to reward pattern fishing and prevent the “one spot” crowd-out that plagues smaller fisheries during tournaments.
- Consistent big bass: Toledo Bend produces fish in the 5–10 lb range reliably enough that serious weight is achievable. Tournament-winning bags in the 25–30 lb range are not uncommon during peak seasons.
- Multiple launch options: The Texas side has several launch facilities—including the premier facilities at the Sabinetown Recreation Area—giving tournament fleets plenty of room to spread out at weigh-in time.
- Year-round quality: Unlike some fisheries that have a narrow peak tournament window, Toledo Bend fishes well across all four seasons, supporting a full event calendar.

Local Club Tournaments
Sabine County and the surrounding area have active bass fishing clubs that run regular local tournaments. These are typically smaller field events with entry fees in the $50–$150 range — a great way for local and regional anglers to compete without the logistics of a major trail.
- Event Window: Recurring monthly events, such as the Toledo Bend Army Rec Site Monthly Bass Tournaments held on the first Saturday of select months (e.g., October, November, December).
- Registration: Local events generally handle sign-ups on-site or via regional Facebook groups just days before launch.
Ask at any bait shop in Hemphill for information about local club events, or join Toledo Bend area fishing groups on Facebook where events are regularly posted.
Pre-Tournament Preparation on Toledo Bend
Practice days
Most tournament formats allow pre-tournament practice on designated days. Use practice to identify key structural patterns rather than fishing specific spots to death. Toledo Bend’s size means pattern fishing (identifying a depth, cover type, or location type that repeats across the lake) generally outperforms spot fishing in competition.
Scouting structure
A quality depth finder with side-imaging will pay dividends on tournament Toledo Bend. Key targets change by season:
- Spring: Shallow timber and spawning flats
- Summer: Deep channel edges and structure in 18–30 feet
- Fall: Points and shallow flats adjacent to baitfish
- Winter: Main lake points and bluff walls
Local knowledge
Getting current intel matters. Talk to bait shop staff in Hemphill on practice days. Watch the local Facebook fishing groups — anglers post catches and areas openly, and you can get a feel for what patterns are producing.
Boat prep
- Toledo Bend has submerged timber and stumps, especially in creek arms. Inspect your lower unit before the tournament.
- Make sure your livewell aeration is functioning well — fish care matters for release quality and TPWD compliance
- Texas requires tournament participants to have current Texas registration for their vessel
Rules, Regulations, and Tournament Compliance
Texas fishing regulations apply to:
All anglers fishing the Texas portion of Toledo Bend during a tournament must have a valid Texas fishing license. Non-resident licenses are available at tpwd.texas.gov.
Bass size limits and bag limits
- Largemouth bass minimum: 14 inches (Texas)
- Daily bag limit: 5 bass
- Individual tournament rules may be more restrictive than state minimums — always check your event rulebook.
Dead fish penalties
Most tournaments penalize dead fish at weigh-in. Use a good quality livewell system, keep water oxygenated, and consider a livewell treatment additive during warmer months.
Catch and release
Toledo Bend actively manages its fishery for long-term quality. Proper catch and release after weigh-in is both required by tournament rules and important for the lake’s ongoing health.
Why Tournament Teams Stay at Mid Lake Campground
Tournament anglers have specific needs that Mid Lake Campground is set up to meet:
Private boat ramp
No competition for ramp space at 4:30 AM launch time. You’re not waiting in a line at a public ramp while your partner is still rigging rods. Our private ramp is exclusive to Mid Lake Campground guests.
Trailer and vehicle parking
We have space for trucks and trailers. Tournament teams show up with gear and rigs — we accommodate that.
Sabinetown
We are only a 5-minute boat ride to Sabintown where many of the bass tournaments are headquartered out of. Including the Big Bass Splash in May 2027, and MLF Bass Pro tournament April 1-4 2027, and MLF Columbia PFG College Fishing National Championship February 10-12, 2027.
Early morning infrastructure
Coffee at 4 AM, outdoor covered space for pre-launch rigging, and direct water access without driving anywhere. This is what tournament mornings should feel like.
Waterfront cabins for team accommodations
We have cabins and houses that sleep from 2 to 12 comfortably. All of our rentals have power for battery charging. Multiple anglers can share a cabin comfortably, splitting the cost and keeping the team together for evening strategy sessions. Having a covered porch for end-of-day debriefs is a bonus most hotel rooms don’t offer.
Full-hookup RV sites
Teams bringing their own rigs can utilize our full-hookup sites with water, electricity, and sewer, keeping full access to campground amenities and the private ramp.
