Fall is a wonderful time to experience East Texas, and this October, visitors have another reason to make a weekend of it.
Savor East Texas returns to Hemphill October 9–11, 2026, bringing a three-day celebration of local food, art, craftsmanship, music, and East Texas traditions to the community.

For guests staying at Mid Lake Campground, Savor East Texas offers something a little different from a typical weekend on Toledo Bend. You can still enjoy peaceful mornings by the lake, spend time outdoors, and settle into the slower pace that makes a fall getaway so appealing, but you can also head into Hemphill and experience an event centered around the people, creativity, and flavors of the region.

Instead of choosing between a lake weekend and a local festival, this is a chance to enjoy both.

What Is Savor East Texas?

Savor East Texas is designed as a celebration of East Texas culture and creativity. The 2026 event is scheduled for Friday, October 9 through Sunday, October 11, with activities taking place around downtown Hemphill and surrounding venues.

The City of Hemphill’s official calendar currently confirms SAVOR ETX for October 9–11, while the event’s current public information describes the 2026 theme as “Traditions of the Pines.” Programming is expected to highlight food, art, craftsmanship, music, and other traditions associated with East Texas.

Visitors can expect the weekend to involve more than simply walking through a traditional festival. Current event information includes cooking and food competitions, art displays and sales, vendors, food trucks, music, and activities spread among several locations in Hemphill.

That makes it an especially nice event for couples, families, and groups where everyone may be interested in something slightly different.

Taste a Little of East Texas

Food is naturally one of the highlights.

One of the currently listed Saturday activities is a Dutch oven cooking competition and exhibition. The competition is scheduled for October 10 at Sugar Creek Gardens, with the competition period listed from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM and awards later that evening on the Courthouse Lawn.

Other food-centered activities listed for the 2026 event include preserved-food and fermentation competitions. Together, they fit nicely with the overall theme of celebrating regional traditions rather than simply creating another food festival.

There’s something appropriate about that in East Texas. Food here is often connected to family gatherings, outdoor cooking, hunting and fishing camps, church events, reunions, and recipes that have been handed from one generation to another.

Savor East Texas gives visitors a chance to experience some of that local character while they’re here.

Explore the Creative Side of Hemphill

The weekend isn’t limited to what’s being cooked.

Current Savor East Texas information also highlights visual art and craftsmanship, with photography, painting, fiber work, jewelry, and three-dimensional art among the creative categories associated with the event.

Vendors and displays around downtown give visitors an opportunity to browse, meet local makers, and perhaps take something home that actually reminds them of their trip.

This is also a good reason not to rush through Hemphill. Spend some time around downtown, visit local businesses, find somewhere for lunch or dinner, and see what else you discover along the way.

When you’re visiting Toledo Bend, sometimes the most memorable part of the trip happens when you explore a little farther beyond the shoreline.

Make It a Full Fall Weekend at Toledo Bend

Because Savor East Texas stretches across three days, we think it works best as a weekend rather than a quick trip into town.

Arrive at Mid Lake Campground on Friday and give yourself time to settle in. Enjoy the lake, unpack, and ease into the weekend before heading into Hemphill for whichever activities interest you.

Saturday can be your main festival day. Explore the competitions, vendors, art, food, and downtown activities without worrying about having to drive a long distance home afterward.

Then let Sunday move a little slower.

Enjoy coffee at Mid Lake Campground, spend some time beside Toledo Bend, explore another nearby attraction, or simply relax before heading home.

It’s an easy combination: come for Savor East Texas and stay for the lake.

Why October Is a Great Time to Visit

There’s another reason this event fits Toledo Bend so well.

October marks the transition into fall around the lake. Summer is behind us, outdoor activities become increasingly comfortable, and the season lends itself to weekends where you don’t necessarily need a packed itinerary.

Savor East Texas gives you something special to experience, but it doesn’t have to consume the entire trip.

You can spend a few hours enjoying the event and still have plenty of time left for the reason so many people come to this part of East Texas in the first place: slowing down and enjoying Toledo Bend.
