Toledo Bend Reservoir is one of those places that anglers hear about for years before they finally make the trip — and almost without exception, their reaction when they get here is some version of “why did I wait so long?”
Stretching 65 miles along the Texas-Louisiana border with over 185,000 surface acres and 1,200 miles of shoreline, Toledo Bend is the largest man-made lake in the South and one of the most storied bass fisheries in the country. But it’s also a destination for families, boaters, kayakers, and anyone who wants to spend a few days on truly beautiful, uncrowded water.
If you’re planning your first trip, this guide will walk you through everything — from getting here to what to bring, what to expect on the water, and where to stay.
What Makes Toledo Bend Special
Toledo Bend was created in 1969 when the Sabine River Authority dammed the Sabine River to form a reservoir for hydroelectric power and water supply. The result was a lake that flooded an enormous expanse of East Texas and Louisiana piney woods — and all that submerged timber became the foundation of one of the best bass fisheries in the nation.
Decades of management and careful stewardship have kept the fishery healthy. Toledo Bend regularly produces largemouth bass in the 8–12 lb range. The record fish from this lake will make your eyes water. And because the lake is so large, even during busy seasons you can find stretches of water where it feels like you have the whole place to yourself.
Beyond fishing, the lake is simply beautiful. East Texas pines and hardwoods line the shores. Quiet coves offer calm water for swimming and kayaking. And the sunrises and sunsets over Toledo Bend are the kind of thing people drive hours to see.
Getting to Toledo Bend
Toledo Bend straddles the Texas-Louisiana state line, with access points on both sides. Mid Lake Campground is located near Hemphill, Texas, on the Texas side of the lake.
Driving distances to Hemphill, TX:
- Houston: approximately 2.5 hours northeast via US-59
- Dallas: approximately 3.5 hours east via US-59
- Shreveport, LA: approximately 2 hours west on US-84
- San Antonio: approximately 4.5 hours
US-59 is the main corridor from the Houston area. From Dallas, I-20 east to Carthage and then south on US-59 is the typical route. From Shreveport, US-84 west puts you right in the area.
Tips for the drive:
- Sabine County (Hemphill area) has limited cell service in spots — download offline maps before you leave.
- Fill up your gas tank in Hemphill before arriving at the campground. That way, you’re all set for your stay and don’t have to worry about heading back into town for fuel while you’re relaxing.
When to Visit: Best Times of Year
Toledo Bend is fishable year-round, but certain seasons offer distinct advantages.
Spring (March–May) is the peak season for most anglers. Bass are spawning, crappie are stacked in the shallows, and the weather is ideal. Expect higher demand for cabins and campsites — book early.
Summer (June–August) means heat, but also excellent early-morning topwater action and fantastic night fishing. Families tend to visit in summer for the combination of fishing and lake recreation.
Fall (September–November) is arguably the best-kept secret. Crowds drop, water cools, and bass go on a feeding frenzy chasing shad. Topwater fishing in October is as good as it gets. This is the season locals love.
Winter (December–February) is quiet, cold, and surprisingly productive. The lake empties out, and big bass are caught on deep structure by patient anglers. If you’re serious about a trophy fish and don’t mind bundling up, winter has its rewards.
Fishing Licenses: What You Need
Because Toledo Bend sits right on the border of Texas and Louisiana, a valid fishing license from either state covers you for the entire reservoir. You do not need both, and you can fish all the way across the lake without worrying about crossing state lines!
A few practical notes:
While either license is valid across the whole lake, you must follow the specific regulations (bag limits, size limits, and gear rules) of the state whose license you are using. Because Texas and Louisiana rules can vary slightly, it’s always a good idea to double-check their guidelines before heading out.

- Daily bag limit for bass: 5 fish

What to Expect on the Water
Boat Ramps and Access
Mid Lake Campground has a private boat ramp available exclusively for guests. There are also public ramps in the area. Call ahead or ask when you check in — we’ll check the availability and have it reserved for you for your stay.
Navigation
Toledo Bend is large enough that navigation tools matter. Download a lake map app (Navionics is a popular option) or pick up a printed map. Some areas of the lake have submerged timber and stumps that aren’t marked — first-timers should be cautious running at high speed in unfamiliar areas, especially in the shallower creek arms.
Boat Rentals
We can point you toward local rental options if you don’t have your own boat. Pontoon boats and fishing boats are available from outfitters in the area.
Fishing Guides

What to Pack for Toledo Bend
For anglers:
- Texas (and/or Louisiana) fishing license
- Tackle appropriate for your target species
- Quality polarized sunglasses (for the sun’s radiation, but not necessary)
- Sunscreen — East Texas sun is intense from March through October
- Bug spray, especially for dawn and dusk fishing
- A good cooler with ice for your catch
For the campground:
- Bedding and towels (if you’re booked for a cabin, they are provided)
- Groceries and meal supplies (Hemphill has a grocery store, but selection is limited)
- Any prescription medications and a basic first aid kit
- A rain layer — weather can change quickly on the lake
For families:
- Life jackets for all ages
- Sunscreen, hats, and rash guards for kids
- Snacks and activities for downtime
- Bug spray is a must for little ones at dusk
