Sometimes the best Toledo Bend vacations are the ones where you don’t spend every day doing the same thing.

Maybe you’ve already spent the morning fishing.

Maybe the kids are ready to get out of the cabin.

Or maybe you’re simply looking for another place to enjoy the lake without wandering too far from the reason you came here in the first place.

That’s where Pendleton Park Recreation Area comes in.

Located on the Texas side of Toledo Bend, Pendleton Park gives visitors another way to experience the reservoir, with a swimming beach, playground, picnic areas, green space, pavilions, an overlook jetty, and a four-lane boat ramp with a floating dock.

For guests staying at Mid Lake Campground, it can be an easy addition to a lake vacation when you’re looking for a little more adventure.

Here are five reasons to put it on your Toledo Bend itinerary.

1. Spend an Afternoon at the Swimming Beach

Fishing may be one of the biggest reasons people travel to Toledo Bend, but eventually someone in the family is going to ask:

“Can we go swimming?”

Pendleton Park has a designated swimming beach, giving families another place to enjoy the water from shore.

Pack the towels, sunscreen, water shoes, and a cooler and make an afternoon of it.

For families staying several days at Mid Lake Campground, outings like this can help break up the vacation nicely.

Fish early in the morning.

Head back to the campground for lunch.

Then spend part of the afternoon swimming and relaxing at Pendleton Park before returning to Mid Lake for the evening.

That’s the beauty of a Toledo Bend trip. You don’t necessarily need a complicated itinerary.

Sometimes the lake is the itinerary.

2. Give the Kids Somewhere New to Explore

Anyone traveling with children knows that changing the scenery can completely reset a vacation day.

Pendleton Park includes playground equipment and green space in addition to its waterfront recreation areas.

That makes it particularly useful for families where not everyone wants to spend eight hours holding a fishing rod. Let the anglers fish. Let the kids play. Have lunch at the park.

Then bring everybody back together for another evening at Mid Lake Campground.

A family vacation doesn’t have to mean everyone participates in every activity. Sometimes the best trips give everybody a little room to enjoy Toledo Bend their own way.

3. Pack Lunch and Have a Toledo Bend Picnic

There is something about eating outside beside the lake that makes an ordinary sandwich taste considerably better.

Pendleton Park offers picnic tables, two pavilions, and open green space. The larger pavilion can also be reserved for gatherings such as family reunions, birthdays, and fishing tournaments.

For a simple outing, pack lunch at your Mid Lake Campground cabin/house before you leave.

Then find a spot and slow the afternoon down.

No reservations to keep.

No complicated schedule.

Just lunch beside Toledo Bend.

4. Take in Another View of the Lake

One of the things you quickly discover about Toledo Bend is that a lake this large never looks exactly the same from one place to another.

Pendleton Park sits on the west bank of Toledo Bend and includes an overlook jetty extending the experience out toward the water.

Bring your camera.

Take a walk.

Watch the boats.

Let the kids look for birds and wildlife.

Or simply stand there for a few minutes and enjoy the view.

When you’re staying directly on Toledo Bend at Mid Lake Campground, visiting another recreation area isn’t about escaping the lake.

It’s about seeing another side of it.

5. It’s Another Option for Boaters

Pendleton Park isn’t just a picnic-and-swimming destination.

The park also has a four-lane boat ramp with a floating dock, making it another public access point for Toledo Bend.

That can be useful information for anglers and boaters who like knowing where the area’s public ramps are located.

Mid Lake Campground guests have the convenience of our own private boat ramp, but learning the surrounding lake access points can still be valuable, particularly when you’re exploring different areas of Toledo Bend.

And if you’re traveling with another family or meeting friends at the lake, a recognizable public recreation area can make coordinating plans easier.

Make Pendleton Park Part of a Full Toledo Bend Day

You don’t have to dedicate an entire vacation day to Pendleton Park.

In fact, it works especially well as one piece of a larger day. Start with an early morning of fishing from Mid Lake Campground. Return to your cabin for breakfast or lunch. Pack the cooler and head out for an afternoon at Pendleton Park. Let the kids swim and play. Enjoy a picnic. Spend some time by the water. Then return to Mid Lake before sunset. Clean up, make dinner, sit outside, and watch another Toledo Bend day come to an end.

Sometimes those simple days become the ones everyone remembers.

Come for Mid Lake. Explore More of Toledo Bend.

One of our favorite things about staying on Toledo Bend is that your campground can be the beginning of the adventure rather than the entire itinerary.

Mid Lake Campground gives you a comfortable place to return to between fishing trips, park visits, afternoons exploring Sabine County, and whatever else you decide to discover.

So if you’ve already settled into your cabin and someone asks:

“What should we do tomorrow?”

Pendleton Park is an easy answer.
